The Museum of Innocence is located in Beyoğlu, Istanbul. It is the first city museum in Istanbul. The history of this museum begins with the novel published in 2008 by Orhan Pamuk who is the Nobel Prize-winning literary artist with the same name as the museum. After the novel achieved international success, a place in Beyoğlu was transformed into a museum inspired by the novel.
We can say that it is the first museum to be adapted from a novel. You must definitely go to the Museum of Innocence, which wins recognition of the foreign tourists and you must also read the novel.
Information About The Museum of Innocence
The Museum of Innocence tells the story Füsun and Kemal. In the novel, Kemal collects the properties of Füsun, such as her shoes, earrings. The origin of this museum idea comes from Orhan Pamuk taking similar things from the past years.
The museum opened in Çukurcuma was created by restoring a house where Orhan Pamuk bought it. The architecture of this building was undertaken by İhsan Bilgin, Cem Yücel and German architect Gregor Sunder Plassmann.
You can see the map where the museum is located on page 574 of the book of ‘The Museum of Innocence‘. In the museum, you can also see Istanbul’s life in the 1950’s, as well as seeing the products mentioned in the novel. In the museum opened in 2012; you can examine the arranged boxes and showcases that the characters described in the novel, worn, heard, seen and accumulated.
Souvenir Shop
You do not have to read the novel to go to the Museum of Innocence. However, if you want to attribute a meaning to the properties in the museum, you had better to read the novel. After touring the museum, you can buy the character’s properties in the shops around it. You can also do online shopping. Among the items you can buy are magnets, Füsun’s earrings, her brooch, postcards, banners, brackets and a broken heart. The prices of the works designed by different artists vary between 5 and 100 Turkish Liras.

Galata Mevlevi House Museum: Galata Mevlevi House which has been serving as a museum since 1975, is also known as Kulekapi Mevlevi House. The Mevlevi House which combined music and science for centuries is located at the beginning of the descent to the Yüksekkaldırım. You can reach more extensive information about Mevlevi culture by visiting the museum.
You can visit the museum between 09.00 – 19.00 hours in summer and 09.00 – 17.00 hours in winter. The entrance fee for the museum is 10 TL and the museum-card is valid there.
St. Antuan Catholic Church: St. Antuan Catholic Church is the largest catholic church and has the most extensive community in İstanbul. If you want to visit this church, you can see it on the left side of Istiklal Street while going from Galatasaray High School to the tunnel.
Pera Museum: This museum where art lovers have been addicted to since 2005, was established to provide a wide range of cultural and artistic services. The museum hosts its guests at the historical Bristol Hotel. The museum is closed on Monday but it is open between 10.00 – 19.00 on Tuesdays and Saturdays and 12.00-18.00 on Sundays. Furthermore, you can visit the museum free of charge on Fridays between 18:00 and 22:00 hours.

You don’t have to go to the ticket office to buy a ticket. The ticket office is closed on Monday. On other days of the week, you can buy ticket between 10.00 – 17.30 hours; on Thursdays, between 10.00 – 20.30 hours.
How To Go The Museum of Innocence?
You have different alternatives to go to the Museum of Innocence, located between Istiklal Caddesi and Tophane.
On foot: You can reach the Museum of Innocence walking 12 minutes from Taksim, 8 minutes from Galatasaray and Tophane, 10 minutes from Istanbul Modern and 10 minutes from Cihangir.
Tramway: If you want to reach the museum by tramway, you need to walk about 10 minutes after getting off at the Tophane station.
Bus: By the busses 129 T Bostanci – Taksim, 25 G Sarıyer – Taksim, 37 T Yıldıztabya – Taksim, 40 Rumelifeneri – Taksim, 48 T Hamidiye Street – Taksim, 49 T Yeşilpınar – Taksim, DT 2 Ortaköy Dereboyu, You can reach the Taksim Square then walk 10-15 minutes to go to the museum.
